Psychiatric Care for Greater Lake Placid Residents
Greater Lake Placid is two communities wearing one name. The incorporated Town of Lake Placid holds 2,360 people (2020 Census) across about 4.7 square miles — a working town where the largest industries are construction and agriculture, with a median household income of $47,018 and a poverty rate of 23.8% (ACS 2024). It is also a heavily Hispanic town: 41.74% Hispanic or Latino (2020 Census, P.L. 94-171), and 49.2% on ACS 2024, with 32.7% of residents foreign-born (ACS 2024). Around the town line stretches the lake country — the Lake Placid urban area held 17,816 people (2020 Census), and the wider Lake Placid CCD held 28,142 residents (ACS 2019–2023) at a median age of 56, with 35.9% age 65 and up (ACS 2019–2023). That lake country is older, quieter, and better off — median household income $65,883 (ACS 2019–2023) — and it swells further in winter, since Highlands County's population rises about 40% seasonally (a county-level estimate reported by AdventHealth Sebring).
Directory searches in October 2026 surfaced no outpatient psychiatry practice with a Lake Placid address. What did surface: one psychology listing, AdventHealth Lake Placid on US 27 — a third-party landmark with no Health Haven affiliation — whose own description says it offers the county's only senior behavioral health unit, an inpatient geriatric unit; Peace River Center's nearest office in Sebring, about 16 miles north; and Sebring's two small psychiatry practices, also about 16 miles north. Health Haven serves patients from Greater Lake Placid from its full-service office at 308 NW 5th Ave in Okeechobee — evaluations, medication management, therapy, addiction recovery, Spravato, and TMS — about an hour east via US 27 and SR 70, with telehealth available anywhere in Florida.

Getting here
Health Haven Okeechobee — 308 NW 5th Ave, Okeechobee, FL 34972 · (863) 261-8354
The natural route runs south and east. From town, take US 27 south past the caladium fields to Bairs Den, where SR 70 begins, then SR 70 east through Brighton ranch country and across the Kissimmee River into Okeechobee, where it meets US 98/US 441 — the office at 308 NW 5th Ave sits in the city's northwest grid, minutes from that junction. The total is about 42–45 miles, roughly 50–60 minutes (est.).
Be honest about the road: below town, US 27 is a four-lane rural highway, but SR 70 east is a two-lane ranch-and-canal corridor with farm and cattle-truck traffic, long no-passing stretches, and a near-serviceless run between Bairs Den and Okeechobee. It is open, dark country at night — wildlife and unlit intersections are the real hazards, not congestion (est.). In town, US 27 carries the county's winter snowbird load, and the Caladium Festival, the last full weekend in July, fills the town and the corridor for its weekend. The Sebring way — US 27 north 16 miles, then US 98 east — is about 65 miles (est.) and strictly longer; it is the bad-day alternate, not a co-equal route.
Because the trip is roughly an hour each way (est.), telehealth matters here. Health Haven offers telehealth anywhere in Florida, as long as the patient is physically in Florida at the time of the appointment — for the visits that don't need the drive.
Care available
Here's what we offer at our Okeechobee office.
- Psychiatric evaluations — a careful first look at what's going on, so we can talk through next steps together.
- Medication management — prescribing and ongoing check-ins, adjusted as we learn what fits.
- Therapy — talk-based care, one on one, at a pace that feels manageable.
- Addiction recovery — support for substance use, wherever you are in the process.
- Spravato (esketamine) treatment — a nasal spray given in our office for treatment-resistant depression, under a provider's supervision the whole time.
- TMS treatment (transcranial magnetic stimulation) — a non-invasive in-office treatment that uses magnetic pulses to reach brain areas involved in mood.
No Lake Placid-area practice advertising Spravato or TMS surfaced in directory checks (October 2026). Health Haven serves patients from Greater Lake Placid from its Okeechobee office, where both are offered in person — neither can be done by telehealth. We see patients 12 and up, and children 8 and up by referral. We accept most major insurance plans — see /insurance. Seven Spanish-speaking providers are on the team practice-wide.
Living here
Lake Placid has grown the overwhelming majority of the world's caladium bulbs since the 1940s — the standing industry figures are 14 farms and about 1,200 acres — and the town calls itself the Caladium Capital of the World. The annual Caladium Festival runs the last full weekend in July. The town is also the Town of Murals: the Lake Placid Mural Society, formed in 1992, has commissioned 47 larger-than-life murals (the town's own count), each depicting a piece of local history, and in 2013 Reader's Digest named Lake Placid America's Most Interesting Town. There are 27 lakes within seven miles of town — Lake June in Winter, about 3,700 acres and Highlands County's third-largest lake, sits on the town's northwest shoulder, and Lake Istokpoga, 27,692 acres and Florida's fifth-largest freshwater lake, lies five miles northeast. The town keeps its own school ladder: Lake Placid Elementary (101 Green Dragon Dr), Lake Placid Middle School (201 S Tangerine Ave), and Lake Placid High School (202 Green Dragon Dr). Toby's American Clown Museum and School (109 W Interlake Blvd, founded 1993) and the Caladium Arts & Crafts Cooperative (132 E Interlake Blvd) anchor Interlake Boulevard, and about 8 miles south, the Archbold Biological Station — a research station established in 1941 — protects Florida scrub on the Lake Wales Ridge.
Why patients come
Greater Lake Placid's mental-health bench, on the October 2026 evidence, is thin and not Spanish-forward — and the drive to Okeechobee is about an hour. Here is what patients from this community tell us matters:
- Spanish-first care — the town is 41.74% Hispanic or Latino (2020 Census, P.L. 94-171), and no Spanish-speaking practice with a Lake Placid address surfaced; seven Spanish-speaking providers are on our team practice-wide.
- Full-service depth — evaluations, medication management, therapy, addiction recovery, Spravato, and TMS under one roof at the Okeechobee office, against a local bench of one psychology listing and Sebring's two small practices 16 miles north.
- Telehealth for the hour — statewide Florida telehealth, as long as you're physically in Florida at appointment time, for the visits that don't need the drive.
- Ages 12 and up — and children 8 and up by referral, for the families anchored in the town's school ladder.

About 42–45 miles, roughly 50–60 minutes (est.): US 27 south past the caladium fields to SR 70 east at Bairs Den, then SR 70 east through Brighton ranch country into Okeechobee, to 308 NW 5th Ave. SR 70 is a two-lane ranch-and-canal corridor — plan for it. The Sebring/US 98 alternate is about 65 miles (est.) and strictly longer.
¿Hay atención en español para pacientes de Lake Placid? / Is care available in Spanish?
Yes. Seven Spanish-speaking providers are on the Health Haven team practice-wide. This matters locally: the Town of Lake Placid is 41.74% Hispanic or Latino (2020 Census, P.L. 94-171) and 49.2% on ACS 2024, and no Spanish-speaking practice with a Lake Placid address surfaced in directory searches (October 2026).
Can I use telehealth from Lake Placid instead of driving to Okeechobee?
Yes. Telehealth is available anywhere in Florida, as long as you are physically in Florida at the time of the appointment — which is why it matters on a spoke where the drive is about an hour (est.). Spravato and TMS are in-person services at the Okeechobee office and cannot be done by telehealth.
Does Health Haven have an office in Lake Placid?
No. Health Haven serves patients from Greater Lake Placid from its office at 308 NW 5th Ave, Okeechobee, FL 34972 — phone (863) 261-8354. There is no Health Haven office, staff, or presence in Lake Placid.
Does the Okeechobee office offer Spravato or TMS?
Yes — both, in person. Okeechobee is a full-service office. No Lake Placid-area practice advertising Spravato or TMS surfaced in directory checks (October 2026).
I'm a seasonal resident at the lakes — can I be seen while I'm in Florida?
Yes, as long as you are physically in Florida at the time of your appointment — for telehealth and in-person visits alike. Highlands County's winter population rises about 40% (a county-level estimate reported by AdventHealth Sebring), and the lake country's seasonal rhythm is exactly why this matters.
