Schizophrenia
Schizophrenia is a condition that can affect thinking, emotions and how a person experiences reality. Care starts with a careful evaluation and ongoing follow-up.

About this topic
What is schizophrenia?
Schizophrenia is a mental health condition that can affect thoughts, emotions, perception and social interaction.
Common signs and symptoms
People describe hearing or seeing things others do not, strongly held beliefs that others do not share, disorganized thinking, trouble concentrating, reduced motivation, or emotional flatness. These experiences can have other causes, and having one of them does not mean someone has schizophrenia. A qualified provider can help you or a loved one understand what is happening.
How evaluation works
Care usually begins with a psychiatric evaluation of symptoms, psychiatric history, physical health and day-to-day functioning. Family members can be involved when the person wants that.
Treatment approaches
Ongoing care often includes regular follow-up, medication management, support with daily skills, and involving family when the person wants that.

Frequently asked questions
Can family members take part in care?
Yes, when the person wants that. Your provider can talk with you about how.
Is schizophrenia the same as split personality?
No. The two are different, and a provider can explain what schizophrenia does and does not involve.
