Condition
Depression
Depression is a health condition that can affect mood, energy and daily life. Care starts with a conversation with a provider about what you are experiencing.

About this topic
What is depression?
Depression is a health condition, not a weakness. It can affect emotions, physical health, relationships and daily functioning, and it can range from mild to severe.
Common signs and symptoms
People describe depression in different ways. Some describe persistent sadness or emptiness, loss of interest in things they used to enjoy, tiredness, changes in sleep or appetite, trouble concentrating, feeling worthless or hopeless, or thoughts of death. Having some of these experiences does not mean you have depression. Only a qualified provider can tell you whether what you are experiencing is depression.
How evaluation works
Care usually begins with a psychiatric evaluation: a conversation about your symptoms, history, lifestyle and goals. Your provider may ask about sleep, other health conditions, medications and past treatment, and may talk with you about next steps.
Treatment approaches
Options depend on the person and can include talk therapy, medication management, or both. For some people whose depression has not improved enough with other treatment, providers may discuss TMS or Spravato (esketamine). TMS and Spravato are offered at our West Palm Beach and Okeechobee offices only, and whether either is appropriate is a decision for you and your provider.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know if it is depression?
Only a qualified provider can say. An evaluation is a way to talk it through.
Do I have to take medication?
Not necessarily. Options depend on the person, and you decide with your provider.
