Communities we serve

Psychiatric Care for Gibsonton Residents

Gibsonton is a young, working river community in south-central Hillsborough County, bordered to the north and east by Riverview, to the south by Apollo Beach, and to the west by Hillsborough Bay. The 2020 Census counted 18,566 residents with a median age of 33.3 years; 28.4% of residents were under 18 (2020 Census), and 42.8% of households had children under 18 living in them (2020 Census). It is a substantially Hispanic and Latino community — 36.2% Hispanic or Latino (2020 Census, P.L. 94-171) and 39.9% (ACS 2024) — and 31.6% of residents age 5 and up speak a language other than English at home (ACS 2020–2024). The economic picture is working-income: median household income of $83,875 sits alongside per-capita income of $35,562 and a 17.2% poverty rate (ACS 2020–2024), and the largest resident industries are construction, health care & social assistance, and retail trade (ACS 2024). The mean commute is 33.0 minutes (ACS 2020–2024).

Here is the honest market picture. Directory searches surfaced no brick-and-mortar psychiatry practice with a Gibsonton address, and the only in-Gibsonton mental-health listing that surfaced is one LCSW counseling practice — therapy, not psychiatry. No Spanish-speaking practice with a Gibsonton address surfaced either. That said, Gibsonton is not a care desert: across the northern border, Riverview has a real psychiatry cluster roughly 3–6 miles away along US-301, Boyette Rd, and Balm Riverview Rd, and a Suncoast Community Health Centers location opened in Riverview in April 2026 expressly to serve "the Riverview and Gibsonton community" — its own announced offer is adult and family medical care, with behavioral health described as a network service. Health Haven's role is precise: we serve patients from Gibsonton from our Tampa office at 3246 Cove Bend Dr, with telehealth carrying much of the routine care.

Getting here

Health Haven Tampa — 3246 Cove Bend Dr, Tampa, FL 33613 · (863) 261-8354

The Tampa office sits in north Tampa (33613), and the drive from Gibsonton runs roughly 20–22 miles, about 30–40 minutes (est.), each way. Two corridors get you there. I-75 crosses the eastern part of Gibsonton, with access from Exit 250 (Gibsonton Dr) and Exit 246 (Big Bend Rd) — I-75 signage north of Exit 246 puts Tampa 19 miles ahead. Or take US-41 north through the center of the community; US-41 alone reaches the east side of Tampa in 7 miles, and from the Big Bend Road junction, Gibsonton lies four miles ahead along US-41 at the Alafia River with downtown Tampa another ten miles beyond.

Honest traps: US-41 is a signalized surface arterial — the direct route, not the fast one — and it slows at the Big Bend Rd / US-41 junction and through the east-Tampa commercial strip (est.). I-75 is the faster line off-peak but carries Brandon and I-4 junction peak congestion, and the Big Bend Road interchange (Exit 246) was under a multi-year widening program (est.). A ~30–40 minute trip each way is in line with Gibsonton's own 33.0-minute mean commute (ACS 2020–2024), but it is still a real trip. That is why telehealth matters here: our telehealth visits are available anywhere in Florida, as long as you are physically in Florida at the time of your appointment — so routine check-ins can happen from home in Gibsonton instead of on US-41.

Care available

Here's what we offer at our Tampa office.

  • Psychiatric evaluations — a careful first look at what's going on, so we can talk through next steps together.
  • Medication management — prescribing and ongoing check-ins, adjusted as we learn what fits.
  • Therapy — talk-based care, one on one: psychotherapy and counseling, at a pace that feels manageable.

Gibsonton residents are served from our Tampa office — no Gibsonton location, just patients from Gibsonton seen at 3246 Cove Bend Dr, with telehealth available statewide in Florida as long as you're physically in Florida at appointment time. We see patients 12 and up, and children 8 and up by referral. We accept most major insurance plans — see /insurance. Our team includes seven Spanish-speaking providers, practice-wide.

Living here

Gibsonton was founded in 1884 by James Gibson Sr., who homesteaded 150 acres at the mouth of the Alafia River, stretching east along the river's south bank. The Alafia runs 48.49 miles and meets Hillsborough Bay at Gibsonton; Bullfrog Creek runs through the community's south, crossed by US-41 on a 1945 northbound and 1960 southbound bridge pair, and the USGS maintains a monitoring location named "Bullfrog Creek at Gibsonton FL." Inside the community, the Golden Aster Scrub Nature Preserve at 12181 East Bay Rd holds 1,181 acres of scrub ridge, pine flatwoods, wet prairie and marsh, with a roughly three-mile loop trail; at the northern edge, the Alafia Scrub Preserve overlooks the river. Daily life is organized along US-41, the community's spine, and along Gibsonton Dr running east to US-301 at Boyette Road. Named manufactured-home communities like Eastwood Estates, Riverwalk, Bullfrog Creek Mobile Home Park, and Country Haven on Bullfrog Creek are part of the housing stock. Schools all carry Gibsonton addresses: Gibsonton Elementary (7723 Gibsonton Dr), Corr Elementary (13020 Kings Lake Dr), Eisenhower Middle (7620 Old Big Bend Rd), and East Bay High School (7710 Old Big Bend Rd).

Gibsonton — "Gibtown" — was the winter home of carnival and circus people, working performers who chose it because they could live ordinary lives here. Percilla the Monkey Girl and the Lobster Boy, Grady Stiles, lived here; the town once had a post office counter built low for dwarf customers; and its zoning famously let residents keep elephants and circus trailers at home so they could practice and repair through the off-season. The International Independent Showmen's Association, founded in 1966 and now the largest showmen's association in the United States with more than 4,500 members, identifies Gibsonton as its home and runs the carnival industry's largest trade show. This is the documented history of working people who spent their working lives being looked at and picked this place to simply live — a heritage treated here with the respect it is due.
