Psychiatric Care for Thonotosassa Residents

Thonotosassa is an unincorporated community in northeastern Hillsborough County, ZIP 33592, with a population of 15,238 (2020 Census) — 15,764 on the ACS 2024 series. The median age is 41.8 years (2020 Census), 22.4% of residents are under 18 (2020 Census), and 29.7% of households include children (2020 Census). It is a spread-out, working, rural-residential place rather than priced suburbia: 575 people per square mile and 23% of residents living in rural areas (2020 Census). Median household income is $71,272, poverty is 16.7%, and 20.4% of residents under 65 are uninsured (all ACS 2020–2024). About one resident in five is Hispanic or Latino — 17.4% (2020 Census, P.L. 94-171) — and 24.0% of residents age 5 and up speak a language other than English at home (ACS 2020–2024).

Directory searches in October 2026 surfaced no brick-and-mortar psychiatry practice with a Thonotosassa address. What did surface in Thonotosassa was psychology listings at a Thonotosassa Road address (older directory records), counseling and PMHNP directory tags with no street address, and WebMD psychiatry results labeled telehealth-only. In-person psychiatry does exist nearby — Temple Terrace about 6 miles west, the USF/Fletcher corridor beyond it, and Plant City about 13 miles east. Health Haven serves patients from Thonotosassa from its Tampa office at 3246 Cove Bend Dr, Tampa, FL 33613, with psychiatric evaluations, medication management, therapy, and telehealth across Florida.

Getting here

Health Haven Tampa — 3246 Cove Bend Dr, Tampa, FL 33613 · (863) 261-8354

The straightforward route is the one residents already drive west: Main Street west from the community core, past the four-way stop at Mango Road, to Fowler Avenue (SR 582), then west on Fowler into the USF/Fletcher part of north Tampa and over to the Cove Bend Dr area. That is roughly 11–14 miles and about 20–30 minutes (est.). For scale: the trip to downtown Tampa runs 15.2 miles and about 20 minutes, and Temple Terrace averages about 6 miles and 12 minutes, with the office just beyond Temple Terrace. The interstate alternative — I-4 west to I-75 north — is longer in miles and similar or longer in time (est.).

The honest trap is the Fowler Avenue run at peak hours: the Fowler Ave / US 301 junction and Fowler's stretch past I-75 are the surface route's chokepoints, and rush hour can push the trip well past the off-peak figure (est.). If you would rather not make the drive, telehealth is the second option, not a compromise — it is available anywhere in Florida as long as you are physically in Florida at the time of the appointment, and 92.5% of Thonotosassa households have a broadband subscription (ACS 2020–2024).

Care available

Here's what we offer at our Tampa office.

  • Psychiatric evaluations — a careful first look at what's going on, so we can talk through next steps together.
  • Medication management — prescribing and ongoing check-ins, adjusted as we learn what fits.
  • Therapy — talk-based care, one on one: psychotherapy and counseling, at a pace that feels manageable.

The destination corridor is dense — psychiatry practices sit about 6 miles west in Temple Terrace, along the USF/Fletcher corridor including USF's own psychiatry center, and about 13 miles east in Plant City — so our position is precise rather than grand: serving patients from Thonotosassa from our Tampa office, on the Fowler Ave corridor you already drive. Telehealth visits are available anywhere in Florida, as long as you are physically in Florida at the time of the appointment. We see patients 12 and up, and children 8 and up by referral. We accept 21 insurance plans — see /insurance. Seven Spanish-speaking providers are on the team practice-wide.

Living here

The name comes from Seminole-Creek words for flint — the USF Water Atlas rendering is "flint is there" — and a Seminole-Creek village southeast of the lake used that flint for tools in the 1810s. After Fort Brooke was established in 1824, a military road was built northwest of the lake between Fort Brooke and Fort King in Ocala; that Fort King road is still on the map as Fort King Highway, crossed in several places by US 301, and it meets Main Street and Taylor Road in the community core. At the center sits Lake Thonotosassa, the largest natural lake in Hillsborough County, at more than 800 acres, ringed by Taylor Road and Fort King Highway on the west, Thonotosassa Road on the south, McIntosh Road on the east, and Knights-Griffin Road on the north, with Flint Creek carrying its water out toward the Hillsborough River.

The landscape around that lake is what gives the place its texture. Hillsborough River State Park at 15402 US 301 North opened in 1938 as one of Florida's first state parks, with Class II rapids on the river — rare in Florida — and pavilions built in the 1930s. The Lower Hillsborough Wilderness Preserve covers 16,000 acres with more than 60 miles of trails, and John B. Sargeant Park sits where Flint Creek meets the Hillsborough River. Nature's Classroom at 13100 Verges Road has been the environmental field study Hillsborough sixth-graders attend since 1969 — more than 328,000 students. Main Street holds the Thonotosassa Branch Library at 10715 Main St, opened in 1989 and describing itself as a rural branch, and Strawberry Passion at 11780 Tom Folsom Rd is a certified-organic u-pick farm. The two housing poles are real: Stonelake Ranch's gated lakefront estates at one end, older rural-residential and manufactured-home streets off Main Street at the other. Thonotosassa Elementary (10050 Skewlee Rd) and Folsom Elementary (9855 Harney Rd) sit inside the community; older students go on to Jennings Middle and Armwood High in Seffner.

Why patients come

Most people who reach us from Thonotosassa are not shopping for a brand — they are working out whether psychiatric care is realistically reachable from a rural-residential community where cost, distance, and time all count. These are the four things patients from here tell us matter.

  • A drive that fits the week — about 11–14 miles and 20–30 minutes (est.) on Main Street to Fowler Ave, the same corridor residents already use for Temple Terrace and north Tampa.
  • Insurance-forward, not affluence-toned — we accept 21 insurance plans, and we would rather talk plainly about cost than dress it up.
  • A second option when the drive doesn't work — telehealth anywhere in Florida, as long as you are physically in Florida at the time of the appointment.
  • Care for teens and adults together — patients 12 and up, children 8 and up by referral, in a community where 22.4% of residents are under 18 (2020 Census).
